Union wants Sheriff Corpus out immediately after civil grand jury levels new accusations
The San Mateo County deputy sheriff’s union called for Sheriff Christina Corpus to resign after the civil grand jury accused her of willful misconduct in office. The grand jury's report, released Friday, detailed allegations of conflict of interest related to her close personal relationship with a former executive director and accusations of retaliatory actions against former staff members. Following an independent investigation, the Board of Supervisors effectively terminated Corpus, citing repeated neglect of duties and obstruction of inquiries into her conduct. Her attorney, Thomas Mazzucco, argued that the accusations are politically motivated and expressed confidence in refuting the claims. Corpus is scheduled to appear in court on July 15 to respond to the allegations and is entitled to a jury trial.
Supervisor Jackie Speier expressed concern over the implications for taxpayers, stating the situation represents a regrettable chapter in the county's history. Last March, San Mateo County voters approved Measure A, allowing supervisors to remove a sheriff for cause with a four-fifths vote. Corpus, the first woman and Latina sheriff of the county, had campaigned on law enforcement reform and transparency.
