San Francisco May Start to See Fancy New Sidewalk Trash Cans at Long Last, By Next Year
San Francisco plans to deploy new stainless steel trash cans, referred to as Slim Silhouette, by late 2025. The Department of Public Works intends to fabricate 3,000 units at a cost of around $3,000 each, a significant reduction from the initial prototype price of $20,000. Despite ongoing budgetary challenges, the project remains active, with Rachel Gordon from the department stating efforts are underway to secure a manufacturer. A pilot program is also planned to further test the cans after design modifications were made following a 2022 trial. City officials have debated the adequacy of the current trash can supply, acknowledging that existing models are outdated and prone to theft.
Supervisor Danny Sauter argued for more cans in his district, emphasizing the need for better waste management. The new cans will incorporate dedicated slots for trash and recycling, aimed at enhancing functionality. This initiative reflects a broader effort to improve urban cleanliness as the city continues to manage its waste challenges.
