Castro Coffeeshop and Nail Salon Defiantly Remain Open, Despite Eviction by Another Planet Entertainment
The Castro Coffee Company and Castro Nail Salon remain operational as of July 1, despite eviction orders from Another Planet Entertainment for the remodeling of the Castro Theatre. Following the expiration of their leases on June 30, public support for the businesses has surged, prompting local officials to step in. Supervisor Rafael Mandelman confirmed that negotiations are underway, with Mayor Daniel Lurie involved in seeking a resolution. Owner Ken Khoury of Castro Coffee expressed hope for a transitional solution if eviction becomes inevitable. Another Planet's spokesperson reiterated their aim for an equitable resolution while focusing on the theater's $41 million renovation.
The situation underscores the tension between urban development and the preservation of longstanding local businesses. Notably, the Castro Nail Salon is recognized as a registered SF Legacy Business, complicating the eviction process. This development may require additional approvals from the SF Planning Commission if APE seeks to replace the salon with a different establishment.
