SF Drag Performer Was Detained By ICE Heading Into Pride Weekend
Hilary Rivers, a Guatemalan drag performer, was detained by ICE during an immigration court hearing in San Francisco just before Pride Weekend. Rivers has been living in the U. S. legally while awaiting the outcome of his asylum case, but his attorney Milli Atkinson argues that his detainment violates the core principles of the asylum system. Despite complying with all legal requirements, Rivers was taken into custody following a scheduled appointment at the ICE office.
Attorney Atkinson noted that out of approximately 20 individuals detained in San Francisco, only two had their cases dismissed, highlighting a troubling trend in ICE's practices. San Francisco Pride issued a statement condemning the federal government's actions against immigrant communities, asserting that the city's vibrancy is due to the contributions of immigrants, especially queer ones. Galería de la Raza is mobilizing support for Rivers with a community event aimed at writing letters of support. This incident reflects ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, which has employed aggressive tactics against asylum seekers. As the community rallies behind Rivers, the implications of this case extend beyond individual rights, touching on broader issues of immigration policy and civil rights.
