Port considers new proposed name for Oakland airport that includes San Francisco

San Francisco, CALocal News

Port of Oakland officials are considering renaming Oakland International Airport to Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport as part of ongoing efforts to incorporate San Francisco into the airport's identity. A federal ruling last November blocked a previous name due to trademark infringement concerns from San Francisco officials. A spokesperson for the San Francisco city attorney's office indicated they would assess the new proposal to safeguard their trademark. Port officials maintain that this new name respects both Oakland's identity and its geographical connection to San Francisco. Craig Simon, director of aviation, expressed pride in the airport's role as a regional gateway.

The port's board is set to discuss the proposal during their meeting on July 10. Simon highlighted that the new name avoids confusion with San Francisco's airport title while still conveying geographic proximity. The airport's existing three-letter OAK code and branding will remain unchanged.
