Artificial intelligence and techs ever-growing presence in LGBTQ community

San Francisco, CALocal News

The Commonwealth Club World Affairs hosted its third-annual Human Rights Summit in San Francisco, focusing on the impact of artificial intelligence on the LGBTQIA+ community. A key panel, “Addressing AI and Tech for the LGBTQIA+ Movement,” explored the challenges of discrimination and algorithmic bias faced by LGBTQ+ content creators. Sister Roma shared her experience with Facebook's real-name policy, which required her to disclose her legal name, thus threatening her public identity. Activist Amp Somers noted that queer individuals often struggle to gain visibility on platforms like YouTube and have faced suppression of their content without explanation. He, along with others, filed a federal lawsuit against YouTube for discrimination, which was dismissed in 2023.

The panel emphasized the need for greater transparency in algorithms and the importance of having advocates within tech companies to support marginalized voices. Celso Dulay, co-founder of The Gaygency, stated that their legal actions sparked discussions around digital representation. The event highlighted the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights in the digital realm and the necessity for continued advocacy.
