Childrens Hospital Oakland strike ends Monday, but UCSF integration battle goes on

San Francisco, CALocal News

Workers at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland ended their strike on June 30, 2025, after a federal judge declined to issue an injunction against UCSF's integration plan. This plan will transition approximately 2,500 workers, including NUHW members, to UCSF's employment, effectively canceling existing union contracts. The union contends that this change will cut take-home pay by about $10,000 annually for many employees, as they will have to contribute to health and retirement benefits for the first time. Despite ending the strike, the union will pursue legal action to contest the integration, with a court hearing scheduled for July 17. Hospital officials acknowledge the potential for reduced pay but emphasize that employees will have access to better pension and comprehensive benefits.

The integration aims to unify the workforce to enhance growth prospects and improve care delivery. The strike lasted from June 18 to June 30, highlighting ongoing tensions between healthcare administration and labor rights. As the integration plan approaches its implementation date of July 6, the ramifications for workers and healthcare services remain a key concern.
