Grizzly Peak Boulevard, Panoramic Way in Berkeley to be closed for fire danger
Berkeley will implement a 24-hour closure of Grizzly Peak Boulevard and surrounding roads starting at 5 a. m. on July 4 to address fire risks. The affected areas include Grizzly Peak Boulevard from Centennial Drive to Skyline Boulevard, Panoramic Way, and Prospect Street, with access limited primarily to local residents and emergency vehicles. This measure comes in response to the deadly 1991 East Bay Hills firestorm, which destroyed about 3,000 homes and led to significant loss of life.
Key sites impacted by the closure include the Lawrence Hall of Science and the UC Botanical Garden, as well as hiking trails on the UC Berkeley campus. Officials will prohibit stopping along Grizzly Peak, ensuring that all turnouts remain closed for safety. The city aims to facilitate fast access for emergency services by restricting through traffic at multiple intersections, including Centennial Drive and Claremont Avenue. Berkeley's proactive stance underscores its commitment to fire safety in a region historically vulnerable to wildfires. The city emphasizes the importance of protecting both residents and natural resources during this high-risk period.
