This Bayview public housing has just one elevator. It will be broken for 19 days.
A power outage caused by heavy winds left the Alice Griffith Apartments in San Francisco without its sole elevator, trapping resident Justice Robinson for nearly 30 minutes. The elevator will be out of service for 19 days, significantly impacting disabled and elderly tenants. Stanley Lovelace, who lives on the fourth floor, has struggled with the steep staircase, stating, "You sweat so much. " The John Stewart Company, managing the building, attributed the delay to a technician shortage and the need for new parts. Despite being offered hotel vouchers, only three households accepted the offer, as many residents prefer to stay in their homes.
Lovelace noted that repairs at Alice Griffith have historically taken weeks, with over 100 housing inspections failed last year primarily due to electrical issues and inoperable elevators. Many tenants feel that the redeveloped complex has worsened their living conditions compared to the previous housing. “It’s just sad — we’re stressed out every day,” Lovelace added, reflecting the ongoing frustration among residents.
