Luries proposed Family Zoning plan would encourage more multifamily housing in SF
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie announced a comprehensive plan to reform the city’s outdated zoning laws, targeting a significant increase in housing supply and affordability. The proposal includes revised height and density regulations to accommodate larger multifamily residences and boost density along commercial corridors. New policies would support housing development near public transit, while ensuring tenant protections remain intact. Brianna Morales from Housing Action Coalition highlighted the need for ongoing reforms beyond the initial proposal to meet the state’s mandate of 82,069 new housing units by 2031. She noted that passing the rezoning proposal would not lead to immediate results, emphasizing the necessity for streamlined permitting and increased funding for affordable housing.
Lurie asserted that local control over housing decisions must be preserved, warning that non-compliance could lead to state intervention. The Family Zoning plan marks a critical step toward modernizing San Francisco’s housing approach while respecting neighborhood character. This initiative reflects the city's commitment to creating a more inclusive environment for families.
