Fire birds Cal Fires helicopter fleet is ready to fly whenever trouble strikes this summer
Cal Fire showcases its helicopter fleet at Napa County Airport, preparing for an active wildfire season. Fire Chief Matt Ryan emphasized the strategic positioning of aircraft to ensure rapid deployments, as California faces an increase in fire incidents this year. Nearly 93,000 acres have burned thus far, significantly exceeding the total for all of 2024. With a warmer spring heightening fire risks, Governor Gavin Newsom proposed an additional $200 million in funding for Cal Fire, bringing the total to over $4. 4 billion.
The agency's goal remains to contain 95% of fires to 10 acres or less, relying heavily on aerial support. Featured aircraft included the Boeing CH-47D Chinook and the Sikorsky UH-60A+ Black Hawk, which support firefighting efforts by dropping water and foam. The Cal Fire Hawk, a new addition, enhances operational capabilities with a capacity for transporting firefighters and dropping water. This preparation underscores Cal Fire's commitment to protecting communities from escalating wildfire threats.
