Casual Carpool Appears to Be Returning, Could Put the Pedal to the Metal Again Late This Summer
The Casual Carpool tradition, a staple of Bay Area commuting, is on the verge of revival this summer after being halted during the COVID-19 pandemic. This grassroots initiative, which allows commuters to share rides for faster access to carpool lanes, originated in the 1970s in response to public transit issues. Volunteer organizer Camille Bermudez highlighted the necessity of this service, with an estimated 332,000 people returning to San Francisco workplaces. Presently, volunteers are collecting survey data and organizing pickup spots to assess community interest. Initial outreach efforts include signage and flyers at key locations, but no rides are currently being provided.
Reports suggest that mid-August could be the ideal time to launch the program, coinciding with the start of the school year. The revival of Casual Carpool aims to offer an alternative as budget cuts threaten public transportation options. Engaging the community through surveys is critical for shaping the program's future.
