Sunset Dunes Park Vandalized Again, Hammocks Stolen
Over the weekend, Sunset Dunes Park suffered another act of vandalism as two public hammocks, valued at $600, were stolen. This incident follows previous vandalism, including the destruction of a public piano and an art installation called "Ocean Calling. " Phil Ginsburg, SF Rec and Parks General Manager, expressed his disappointment but affirmed the park's commitment to remain a welcoming space. Lucas Lux, president of Friends of Sunset Dunes, criticized the vandalism, urging respect among San Franciscans. The recent acts of vandalism have raised concerns among supporters who believe they are targeted, reflecting tensions over the park's location on the former Great Highway.
This sentiment is echoed by local Supervisor Joel Engardio, who faces a recall campaign largely due to the park's contentious opening. Despite these challenges, Engardio plans to host a July 4th parade at the park. The community continues to rally around the park, emphasizing its role in fostering joy and connection.
