Police In San Francisco and San Jose Seize Large Hauls of Illegal Fireworks Ahead of July 4th Holiday
Ahead of the July 4th holiday, police in San Francisco and San Jose seized 3,400 pounds of illegal fireworks in operations aimed at curbing public safety risks. In San Francisco, officers arrested Joe Jenkins after pulling over a stolen U-Haul van containing hundreds of dangerous fireworks, including barrel bombs. Jenkins faces felony charges for illegal possession of explosives and receiving a stolen vehicle. Meanwhile, San Jose police executed a search warrant, detaining Javier Martinez and seizing 1,320 pounds of illegal fireworks. A subsequent investigation led to another search yielding 730 pounds of fireworks and the arrest of David Benito-Carbajal, followed by the seizure of 1,350 more pounds and the arrest of Juan Rocha.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan emphasized the importance of these actions for ensuring safe celebrations. Police Chief Paul Yep also highlighted the serious injuries and incidents caused by illegal fireworks each year. The proactive measures taken by law enforcement demonstrate a commitment to protecting the community during the holiday season.
