Oakland Airport Tries To Change Its Name Again, This Time to Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport
The Port of Oakland is proposing to rename the airport to "Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport" after facing legal setbacks with the name "San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport. " The new name aims to maintain the airport's three-letter identifier "OAK" while still pursuing the more contentious name in ongoing litigation against San Francisco International Airport (SFO). A US magistrate judge granted an injunction against the previous name, which included "San Francisco," leading to this revised proposal. The Port's Executive Director plans to recommend the new name at a board meeting scheduled for July 10, 2025. If the board approves the name change, it would take effect on July 24, 2025.
San Francisco officials, who have expressed strong opposition to Oakland's naming strategy, have yet to determine their response to the current proposal. The ongoing legal battle highlights the competitive dynamics between the two airports as Oakland aims to attract more business. The situation remains fluid as both parties navigate the implications of the proposed name change.
