Stockton man accused of trying to support ISIS, plotting violent attacks, feds say
Ammaad Akhtar, a 33-year-old man from Stockton, was arrested this week on charges of attempting to provide material support to ISIS. Federal prosecutors allege that Akhtar expressed support for the terrorist group, sent money for firearms, and discussed violent attacks. His communications began in February with a person he thought was an ISIS member but was actually an undercover agent. During a meeting, he handed over firearms, cash, and pledged allegiance to the group. If convicted, Akhtar faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison along with a $250,000 fine.
The U. S. Department of Justice emphasized the importance of addressing domestic threats posed by individuals attempting to support terrorist activities. This incident reflects ongoing concerns regarding homegrown extremism and the recruitment of individuals within the United States. Authorities continue to monitor and investigate potential threats linked to extremist groups.
