Americas Tall Ship, the U.S. Coast Guards Eagle, to offer free tours in San Francisco
The U. S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle will dock at Pier 17 in San Francisco on Saturday, offering free tours from 10 a. m. to 7 p.
m. This iconic vessel, which measures 295 feet and features 22,300 square feet of sail, serves as a floating classroom for recruits at the Coast Guard Academy. Originally constructed in 1936 for the German Navy, the Eagle was transferred to the U. S. as a war reparation following World War II.
The ship's presence is part of a 14-week tour along the West Coast, allowing the public to explore its maritime significance. The Eagle will depart on Sunday but will return on July 25 to provide additional tours. This event not only showcases the ship’s rich history but also emphasizes the role of the Coast Guard in training future maritime leaders. Visitors can learn about the ship's features, including its six miles of rigging, while experiencing a piece of living history.
