New Braunfels state rep attempts to block LGBTQ Pride celebration in her home town
State Rep. Carrie Isaac pressured officials to move the Riverside Pride Festival from the Comal County Fairgrounds, asserting that past photographs and statements about the event suggested it could feature sexually explicit performances. In light of her concerns, festival organizers opted to relocate the event to Faith UCC Church. Isaac cited Senate Bill 12, which a federal judge blocked in September, ruling it infringed on free speech rights. Nonetheless, she claimed the law's definitions create legal ambiguity that could expose the venue to liability.
Riverside Pride board member Mike Stegen emphasized that the event was never intended to include sexual content, promoting instead a family-friendly atmosphere. He noted that Isaac's actions have heightened security concerns for the festival, forcing them to seek a new venue. Isaac hinted at potential further action against Riverside Pride, expressing distrust about the nature of the performances. The situation reflects ongoing tensions around LGBTQ+ events in Texas.
