Camp Mystic plans partial reopening in 2026 after devastating floods
Camp Mystic plans to reopen its Cypress Lake site in 2026, following the devastating floods that resulted in the deaths of 25 campers and two counselors. In an email to families, camp officials stated they would comply with new safety regulations and not use cabins that were flooded. They also intend to create a memorial for the victims, referred to as the “Heaven’s 27. ” Matthew Childress, father of one of the deceased counselors, criticized the lack of family consultation regarding the memorial and urged focus on finding the last missing camper, 8-year-old Cile Steward. The floods impacted over 130 lives and led to new legislation mandating stricter safety standards for camps.
These regulations include enhanced training for staff and limitations on building cabins in flood-prone areas. Camp Mystic had previously faced scrutiny for its location, with over half of its buildings situated in a 100-year floodplain. Additional questions regarding the reopening were directed to the families, with further details expected in the coming weeks.
