Bexar County sitting on 34,000 unprocessed voter registrations
Bexar County is grappling with a significant backlog of 34,000 unprocessed voter registrations, primarily due to its outdated registration system, Votech. During a recent meeting, county commissioners voted to replace Votech with a new system, VR Systems, which will cost $2 million, aiming to resolve the backlog before the November election. Republican Commissioner Grant Moody opposed the upgrade, anticipating that the county would transition to the state's TEAM system by then. Nonetheless, Commissioner Tommy Calvert highlighted the need for immediate action to ensure the elections department can process registrations effectively. He warned that failure to address the backlog could lead to lawsuits against the county.
The situation is indicative of broader challenges across Texas, as Travis County has also struggled with system integration. Most smaller counties utilize TEAM for voter registration management. The push for a new system underscores the critical role of timely voter registration in maintaining electoral integrity.
