With merger complete, rebranded UT San Antonio becomes Texas third-largest research university
The University of Texas at San Antonio completed its merger with Texas Health Science Center on Monday, becoming the state's third-largest public research university. With 40,000 students and 17,000 staff members, the institution boasts a research expenditure of $486 million. President Taylor Eighmy, who has led the university since 2017, expressed that UT San Antonio aims to exemplify excellence in education, healthcare, and transdisciplinary research. The merger results in 15 colleges and schools across six campuses, providing 320 undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates. A new, controversial logo was introduced, while the sports teams will continue to use the UTSA insignia.
Eltife noted that the merger reflects a significant impact on both Texas and the nation, blending academic strengths with healthcare education and research. The restructured university is positioned to serve as a model for public research institutions. This merger marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of higher education in Texas.
