3 Renton climbers die in Okanogan County, WA

Three climbers from Renton lost their lives in a fall during a climbing accident near Mazama, Washington, on May 11. The incident took place approximately 16 miles west of Mazama, in the North Early Winters Spire area. According to the Okanogan County Sheriff's Office, an anchor failure while rappelling is presumed to be the cause of the accident. One survivor successfully reached safety and called for help, prompting a response from the Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team. They assisted in recovering the three climbers who died in the accident.

The sheriff's office has expressed gratitude to the search and rescue volunteers involved in the response. An ongoing investigation aims to clarify the circumstances of the fall. The tragic event highlights the risks associated with climbing in challenging terrains.
