Councilmember James Alberson, Jr. has been elected to serve as the Renton City Council President for the year 2025, following a regular council meeting on December 2, 2024. In his capacity as Council President, he will set the council agenda and conduct Committee of the Whole meetings, ensuring the smooth operation of council sessions. Alberson, currently in his four-year term after being elected in 2021, served as Council President Pro Tempore in 2024. His extensive experience includes chairing the Community Services Committee and involvement in several other committees like the Planning & Development Committee.

Councilmember Ruth Pérez will step into the role of President Pro Tempore, managing council meetings in Alberson's absence. Pérez, a council member since 2014, is recognized as the first Latina and immigrant to serve on the council. Both leaders will officially commence their roles in January 2025, marking a new chapter in Renton's local governance and demonstrating a commitment to community engagement and leadership in local issues.
