According to the latest report from the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, India's horticulture production is set to decrease by about 0. 65%, totaling 353. 19 million tonnes in the 2023-24 fiscal year. This estimate represents a drop from the previous year's production of 355. 48 million tonnes.
Despite this overall decline, there are promising signs in specific areas; fruit production is expected to rise by 2. 29%, fueled by increased outputs of mangoes, bananas, lemons, and grapes. However, production of apples, oranges, and several other fruits is anticipated to fall. Vegetable production is projected to hold steady at 205. 80 million tonnes, with significant increases in varieties such as tomato and cabbage.
Additionally, other horticultural segments, including honey and medicinal plants, are showing positive growth trends. The report underscores the complexities of the horticulture sector, revealing both challenges and opportunities for farmers and stakeholders. This mixed outlook is crucial for strategizing future agricultural policies and practices.
