Unionized WSU student workers going on strike

Pullman, WALocal News

Unionized student workers at Washington State University (WSU) are poised to strike on January 17, 2024, following a year of negotiations that have failed to resolve critical issues surrounding healthcare coverage. The Washington State University Coalition of Academic Student Employees (WSU-CASE) highlights that while healthcare is provided at no cost, the high deductibles create financial barriers for many student workers seeking medical care. In a rally held on September 27, 2023, union member Gavin Doyle articulated the group's commitment to advocating for affordable healthcare, stating, “We can’t do it with people not being able to afford their medical bills. ” The university has spent approximately $4. 2 million on healthcare for graduate student workers, but changes to the plan could affect students not employed by WSU.

With over 1,100 members voting to authorize the strike, the impending work stoppage raises concerns about the disruption of classes and lab activities. WSU President Kirk Shulz has reassured that efforts will be made to ensure classes proceed smoothly despite the strike. The union's stance is clear: they are fighting for significant changes that will benefit not just current employees but also future academic student workers. The strike represents a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle for better working conditions and support for student employees.
