Decisions regarding WSU budget cuts incoming

Pullman, WALocal News

Washington State University will implement funding cuts exceeding 4%, totaling $17 million, for the fiscal year 2026. Department leaders are required to submit preliminary plans by July 11 that outline how to allocate the reduced budget. This budget reduction follows a $9. 9 million cut in state funding over the next two years, resulting from a 1. 5% decrease to higher education signed by Governor Bob Ferguson.

The university also faces uncertainties regarding federal research funding, with potential caps on indirect cost rates for new grants. Certain departments, including the College of Arts and Sciences and the WSU Police Department, have been excluded from these funding cuts. University Regents indicated that layoffs could occur as a result of the budget constraints. Finance and Administration will evaluate the submitted plans within 30 days after the budget's approval. These financial challenges reflect ongoing difficulties faced by higher education institutions across Washington.
