Ground beef sold in Rhode Island may be contaminated with E. coli, what you need to know
The U. S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service confirmed a public health alert for ground beef products sold at Whole Foods due to E. coli contamination, affecting over 25 states, including Rhode Island. The recalled items, produced by Organic Rancher on May 22 and 23, 2025, are vacuum-packed containers labeled as 85% lean.
Although these products are no longer on store shelves, officials urge consumers to discard or return any remaining items. The establishment number "EST. 4027" is featured inside the USDA inspection mark. The FSIS has not reported any confirmed illnesses but warns that customers may still have the contaminated beef in their freezers. Cooking meat to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit is crucial for eliminating harmful bacteria.
Symptoms of E. coli infection can include dehydration and bloody diarrhea, with severe cases leading to kidney failure. Organic Rancher stated on its website that the issue has been addressed and that unaffected products remain safe for consumption.
