City of Providence Announces Summer Rates for Providence Community Electricity Program
The City of Providence has announced a substantial reduction in electricity rates for its Community Electricity Program, lowering the default supply rate from 16. 287 cents/kWh to 10. 014 cents/kWh, effective with the May 2025 meter read. This new pricing will be fixed for six months, ensuring participants benefit from lower costs without needing to take action. Mayor Brett P.
Smiley emphasized the importance of affordability and sustainability, stating that the program helps residents reduce their carbon footprints while saving money on electricity bills. Since its launch in 2023, the initiative has successfully delivered $3. 2 million in savings, with residential participation accounting for $2. 4 million of that total. The majority of participants utilize the “Providence Standard,” which offers 5% more renewable energy compared to Rhode Island Energy’s Last Resort Service.
The renewable energy is sourced from local projects, including wind turbines and solar energy facilities. Additionally, residents and businesses have the option to enhance their renewable energy contributions to 50% or 100% at any time, promoting a greener future. Participants have the flexibility to opt out of the program without incurring any costs.
