RI researcher seeks public's help in learning secrets of Pedro the Shark
Researchers at the Atlantic Shark Institute are seeking the recovery of a satellite tag that detached from a young great white shark named Pedro, captured off Rhode Island in August. The tag, which provided insights into Pedro's movements and environmental conditions, began transmitting data before depleting its battery. To incentivize the public, the Institute offers a $250 reward in merchandise for the tag's return. Pedro is still equipped with an acoustic tag that transmits a less detailed signal to receivers along the East Coast. Dodd noted that the tag's last signals indicated it was moving south, which aligns with the migration patterns of young great whites.
Researchers recorded Pedro's behavior as healthy, spending considerable time in shallower waters. They captured only about 5% of the tag's data before it ran out of power. Dodd is hopeful that the tag will wash ashore, particularly on a New Jersey beach, and has called on followers to remain vigilant.
