Foster teen seriously burned in fiery stunt at North Smithfield reservoir, police say
An 18-year-old Foster resident, Richard G. Scott, suffered severe burns after jumping into the Slatersville Reservoir while his gasoline-soaked clothing was on fire. The incident, which took place on September 6, stemmed from an attempt to replicate a stunt from an Instagram video. Witnesses observed the fiery display and recorded it, with a video later shared online. Scott's friend, who participated in the stunt, reported that he was already wet from swimming, but Scott's clothing was dry before being ignited with gasoline.
Emergency responders confirmed that Scott suffered third-degree burns, leading to his transport to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. The fire marshal retrieved a gas container from the scene, and the area is marked with no trespassing signs. Despite the dangerous nature of the stunt and the injuries sustained, neither Scott nor his friend faced charges as of September 11. The incident highlights the potential dangers of social media-inspired stunts among young people.
