School-Zone Speed Cameras to Begin Activation August 27

Providence, RILocal News

Providence will activate Portable Camera Units (PCUs) in school zones starting August 27, 2025, imposing $50 fines on drivers exceeding the speed limit by 11 mph or more. These cameras will operate Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 6 PM, enhancing safety for both pedestrians and drivers. The city aims to address speed-related concerns in high-traffic areas. Camera locations include Union Avenue and Waverly Street, 156 Reservoir Ave. , and several others.

Each violation will undergo a review process by Providence Police and Conduent to ensure accuracy before tickets are mailed. The fine structure is set at $50 for the initial and subsequent violations. To further improve compliance, increased signage will be installed in areas where speed limits are enforced by the cameras. This initiative follows the PCUs' initial activation in January 2018, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance public safety in school zones.
