School-Zone Speed Cameras to Begin Activation August 27

Providence, RILocal News

Providence will activate Portable Camera Units (PCUs) in school zones on August 27, 2025, to enhance speed limit enforcement. Drivers exceeding the speed limit by 11 mph or more will face a $50 fine, with violations reviewed by local police and the camera vendor, Conduent. The cameras will operate on school days from 7 AM to 6 PM, targeting problematic traffic areas. Current camera locations include Union Avenue and Waverly Street, and 156 Reservoir Ave. , among others.

This initiative, first introduced in January 2018, aims to bolster safety for students and pedestrians in high-traffic zones. Increased signage will inform drivers of the enforcement areas. The program reflects ongoing efforts by city officials to reduce speeding and improve public safety. The first fine issued under this enforcement will also be $50, with subsequent fines maintaining the same amount.
