School-Zone Speed Cameras to Begin Activation August 27
The City of Providence will activate Portable Camera Units (PCUs) in school zones starting on August 27, 2025, with fines of $50 for drivers exceeding the speed limit by 11 mph or more. These cameras will operate on school days from 7 AM to 6 PM, focusing on locations with known traffic and speed issues. Each violation captured will undergo review by Providence Police and Conduent, the managing vendor, ensuring accuracy before tickets are issued. Increased signage will be installed in areas where speed limits will be enforced via cameras, enhancing driver awareness. This initiative originated with the PCUs first being activated in January 2018, aimed at improving public safety.
The program reflects ongoing efforts to address speeding concerns around schools and protect pedestrians. Local authorities have prioritized safety measures in response to community feedback regarding traffic issues. The fines are intended to deter speeding and promote compliance with the law.
