School-Zone Speed Cameras to Begin Activation August 27

Providence, RILocal News

Providence will begin enforcing speed limits in school zones with Portable Camera Units (PCUs) starting August 27, 2025. Drivers exceeding the limit by 11 mph or more will incur $50 fines, promoting safety for pedestrians and students. The cameras will operate Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 6 PM on school days, focusing on areas with significant traffic issues. Current PCU locations include Union Avenue and Waverly Street and 156 Reservoir Ave. , among others.

Each violation will be reviewed for accuracy by Providence Police and an external vendor before fines are issued. This approach, first implemented in January 2018, aims to deter speeding in school zones and reduce accidents. Enhanced signage will accompany the enforcement to alert drivers to the presence of speed cameras. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to prioritize pedestrian safety in the city.
