School-Zone Speed Cameras to Begin Activation August 27

Providence, RILocal News

Providence will activate Portable Camera Units (PCUs) in school zones starting August 27, 2025, targeting drivers exceeding the speed limit by 11 mph or more. Fines of $50 will be issued for each violation, which will be reviewed for accuracy by Providence Police and Conduent, the vendor managing the camera system. The cameras will operate on school days from 7 AM to 6 PM to enhance safety for pedestrians and drivers. Current camera locations include Union Avenue, Waverly Street, and Reservoir Avenue, among others. This enforcement strategy aims to deter speeding in areas with high traffic concerns, particularly near schools.

The PCUs were first activated in January 2018 and are strategically placed based on historical speed and traffic data. Increased signage will accompany the enforcement to inform motorists of the speed limits and photo enforcement. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to ensure student safety in Providence.
