School-Zone Speed Cameras to Begin Activation August 27

Providence, RILocal News

Providence will activate Portable Camera Units (PCUs) in school zones beginning August 27, 2025, targeting drivers who exceed the speed limit by 11 mph or more. Violations will result in a $50 fine, with tickets mailed after review by Providence Police and Conduent, the vendor managing the cameras. The initiative aims to enhance safety for pedestrians and drivers in high-traffic areas, where speed has been a concern. The current camera locations include several streets such as Union Avenue and Waverly Street. First implemented in January 2018, the PCUs have been part of a broader effort to improve traffic safety during school hours.

Operating hours for the cameras will be from 7 AM to 6 PM on school days. To further support the enforcement, increased signage will be positioned in zones where speed limits are monitored. This measure reflects the city's commitment to public safety and responsible driving near schools.
