Hurricane Erin disrupts Southern New England, prompting the Block Island Ferry to cancel all services on Thursday. Easton's Beach in Newport closes due to dangerous rip currents and heavy surf, with swimming banned until conditions improve. The National Weather Service projects seas of 9 to 14 feet and northeast winds of 14 to 18 mph, with gusts reaching 29 mph on Thursday. A gale warning and high surf advisory are in effect, with Ocean Drive in Newport closed due to wave activity and debris. Lifeguards will patrol the beach to ensure public safety as the storm approaches.

The storm is expected to move northeast, passing southeast of Nantucket on Friday. Local officials emphasize that while the storm remains offshore, its size and strength create hazardous conditions for the area. Residents are urged to remain cautious as wind speeds and surf conditions escalate.
