Stefan Pryor to return as RI commerce secretary
Stefan Pryor's return as Rhode Island's Commerce Secretary, pending Senate confirmation, marks a significant leadership change for the state's economic development efforts. He previously held the position from 2015 until 2022, when he left to pursue a run for state treasurer. After finishing second in the Democratic primary, Pryor spent over a year as secretary of housing before transitioning to the private sector. Jim Bennett, the interim commerce secretary, will remain in his role as president and CEO of the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation, supporting Pryor's efforts. Governor Dan McKee noted the importance of their collaboration in continuing the state's economic progress, which Pryor's return is expected to enhance.
Pryor's salary will be $238,597, the same as his predecessor. Local business leaders, including Laurie White of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, expressed eagerness to partner with him. This leadership change comes as McKee prepares for his re-election campaign next year.
