Burning messages, lasting memories The interactive heart of the Warriors Cairn monument

Providence, RILocal News

The Warriors Cairn Memorial was dedicated at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter, providing an interactive tribute to veterans. Conceived by a team of Vietnam veterans, the memorial allows visitors to write messages on wooden chips, replacing the original concept of using stones. Steve Hebert, a contributing veteran, explained that the idea was sparked during a VA-sponsored discussion on moral injury. The memorial features granite columns for each service branch, a flagpole, and a headstone inscribed with, “For those who can no longer speak for themselves. ” Funding for the project came from personal donations and community events, highlighting the veterans' commitment to their cause.

The dedication on July 26 represented the culmination of nearly eight years of effort, collaboration, and fundraising. The project faced challenges, including the decision to use wood chips instead of stones due to liability concerns. The memorial serves as a lasting tribute, fostering remembrance and connection among visitors.
