Farm Fresh RI is making local food accessible for all. How the organization has grown
Farm Fresh Rhode Island serves as a crucial link between local food producers and the community, having connected 250,000 individuals to fresh food options in 2024. The organization supports 252 farmers and distributed $881,600 worth of local food to K-12 schools in Rhode Island. However, federal funding cuts totaling nearly $3 million threaten its operations and the livelihoods of local farmers. Volunteers and donations play an essential role in sustaining Farm Fresh RI's initiatives, which focus on increasing access to healthy food in underserved communities. Last year, 2,475 households benefitted from nutrition incentives at farmers markets.
The nonprofit's commitment to a more equitable food system is evident through its community outreach and educational programs. The organization encourages community involvement through volunteering and attending its annual Local Food Fest. Farm Fresh RI continues to seek alternative funding to maintain its vital programs amid current challenges.
