City of Providence Officials Urge Community Members to Exercise Caution During Extreme Heat Conditions
Providence officials, including Mayor Brett P. Smiley, have opened cooling centers and splash pads as an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from June 23 to June 25, 2025. The National Weather Service anticipates heat indices soaring between 100-110 degrees, prompting the need for community precautions. Cooling centers will operate from Monday through Wednesday, providing free bottled water and allowing only certified service animals. Residents should minimize outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors.
Several water parks will remain open to provide relief, although some facilities, such as James Ahearn Park, will not open. Heat-related illnesses can accumulate over consecutive days, making it crucial for residents to take safety measures. Residents are encouraged to register for the CodeRED emergency notification system for timely updates. In case of emergencies, residents should dial 911 and contact PVD311 for non-emergency issues.
