Providence, RILocal News

Providence officials have opened cooling centers and splash pads from June 23 to June 25, 2025, in response to an Extreme Heat Warning. The National Weather Service forecasts heat index temperatures reaching between 100-110 degrees. Mayor Brett P. Smiley encourages residents to stay indoors, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities. Free bottled water will be available at the cooling centers, which only permit certified service animals.

Vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those with health issues, are urged to take extra precautions. A list of open cooling centers and recreation facilities can be found on the city’s website. The city also warns against illegal activities such as opening fire hydrants for cooling. Residents can stay informed by registering for the CodeRED emergency notification system.
