Providence Welcomes American Cruise Lines American Liberty to Waterfront

Providence, RILocal News

Providence officials, including Mayor Brett P. Smiley, celebrated the arrival of the American Liberty, a 100-passenger cruise ship from American Cruise Lines, marking a revival of cruise tourism in the city. The welcome event occurred at a newly constructed floating pier, which allows for immediate cruise operations while long-term infrastructure plans are being finalized. Governor Dan McKee emphasized the significance of this development for Rhode Island's tourism sector and local economy. American Liberty joins the cruise line's New England itineraries, offering visitors access to Providence’s renowned dining and cultural experiences.

The Providence Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau anticipates that the cruise will generate over 2,500 hotel room nights and a direct economic impact exceeding $1. 3 million this summer. Officials are also exploring options for a permanent docking facility along the Providence River, which could enhance the city's status as a cruise destination. RIDOT Director Peter Alviti expressed excitement over the expanded use of the India Street ferry terminal, previously utilized for summer ferry services. This initiative aims to create a lasting tourism gateway that showcases the city's waterfront and cultural attractions.
