Portland's WNBA team appears to have a name

Portland, ORLocal News

Portland's WNBA franchise plans to tip off in 2025, likely under the name "Fire," a nod to the city's previous team from the early 2000s. Trademark applications for the name were recently filed, covering merchandise and entertainment. While Portland has a passionate women's sports community, including a popular women's sports bar, some, like Bill Oram from the Oregonian, criticize the name choice due to its connection with Oregon's wildfire history. Oram argues that naming the team "Fire" in 2025 would be akin to naming a New Orleans team "the Tide" post-Katrina. Owner Lisa Bhathal Merage acknowledged the difficulties in choosing a name, citing trademark issues.

The team is engaging the public for name suggestions through a poll and will reveal its decision on July 15. This move reflects Portland's evolving identity and the desire for a name that resonates with current cultural values. The team's name choice will likely influence community support and brand identity as it prepares for its inaugural season.
