Staff at PeaceHealth Southwest Say Job Cuts Could Backfire
PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center will terminate over 100 employees, predominantly support staff, as part of a 1% workforce reduction due to ongoing financial challenges. The layoffs, scheduled for June 21, will affect critical roles such as lab technicians and social workers, who play essential roles in patient care and transitions. Emma Nellor, a medical social worker, expressed that these cuts will likely prolong hospital stays, increasing pressure on emergency units. PeaceHealth stated that the decision followed extensive financial analysis and a review of the healthcare landscape. Union representatives have questioned whether the potential changes to Medicaid under the Trump administration are being used as an excuse for the layoffs.
The organization is providing transitional support and exploring opportunities to reassign displaced workers to available positions. Longer hospital stays could also hinder the ability to accommodate new patients, affecting care across the region. This situation reflects broader financial pressures facing healthcare providers nationwide.
