Women's shelter slated to open in Portland this fall

Portland, ORLocal News

Bethanie's Room, an overnight emergency shelter for women experiencing homelessness, is set to open this fall in Northwest Portland, located at NW 17th Avenue and NW Lovejoy. Named in honor of a former guest at Blanchet House, the shelter addresses a critical need for safe spaces for women facing homelessness. Scott Kerman, director of Blanchet House, emphasized the lack of overnight shelters for women on the city's west side prior to this initiative. Women on the streets often face severe challenges, including violence and sleep deprivation. While the shelter has the backing of city officials, local residents have raised concerns about potential issues such as trash, drug use, and a perceived lack of planning.

An online petition opposing the shelter has already gathered more than 100 signatures. Kerman aims to build trust with the community, stating, "We're going to do everything we can to earn that trust and confidence. " Plans for the shelter's opening are underway, with community meetings scheduled to address residents' concerns.
