Infant care in Oregon averages more than 19K a year

Portland, ORLocal News

Oregon's average annual cost for center-based infant care has soared to $19,500, marking a striking 78% increase since 2020. This hefty price tag accounts for 16% of a typical married couple's median income of around $125,500, ranking among the highest in the U. S. Rising childcare costs have prompted many parents, particularly women, to scale back their work hours or leave the workforce entirely. In response, Oregon lawmakers are considering more than a dozen bills aimed at alleviating financial strain on families.

Proposed measures include creating a referral system and grant program to connect parents with childcare providers tailored to their needs. Another bill, recently signed into law, streamlines the permitting process for new childcare facilities in both single- and multi-family neighborhoods. Rep. Pam Marsh highlights the critical role of affordable childcare in fostering healthy child development and supporting an effective K-12 education system. The fate of these legislative proposals remains uncertain as the session is set to adjourn on June 29.
