Skamania Sheriff considers citations as search and rescues continue to spike
Skamania County Sheriff Summer Scheyer reports a staggering 400% rise in search and rescue operations in May 2025 compared to the same month in 2024. This spike follows previous warnings issued to the public about safe recreation practices. In response, Scheyer plans to propose an ordinance allowing deputies to issue citations for reckless or negligent behavior leading to rescues. She aims to alleviate the financial burden placed on the county by unfunded state mandates. Recent rescue operations include an Oregon woman suffering leg cramps on Dog Mountain and a Portland man whose vehicle became stuck in the snow.
Another incident involved a young man injuring his spine while kayaking, and a 35-year-old man collapsing on Beacon Rock. These incidents highlight the challenge posed by out-of-town visitors engaging in risky recreational activities. Scheyer's proposed ordinance seeks to enhance public safety and ensure responsible behavior among outdoor enthusiasts.
