Camel euthanized as authorities evaluate, relocate animals from Oregon safari park

Portland, ORLocal News

Authorities euthanized a camel at the West Coast Game Park Safari in Coos County after veterinarians diagnosed it with multiple serious medical conditions, determining that transport would likely lead to its death. U. S. Department of Agriculture reports have flagged ongoing concerns about animal welfare at the park for nearly a decade. Troubling findings from inspections included a dead tiger in a freezer, malnourished big cats, and unsanitary conditions in animal enclosures.

Following a lengthy criminal investigation, the Oregon State Police served search warrants at the facility to assess its operations. An evaluation of the remaining animals is currently in progress. The authorities have reached out to the park for comment but have not received a response. This situation underscores the critical importance of enforcing animal welfare laws at such facilities. The investigation could lead to significant changes in regulations governing animal care and treatment.
