Everyday Heroes Runners going the distance for childhood cancer research

Varun Varma, diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma at 14, inspires those around him with his unwavering positivity. He is the "Buddy" of Seth Buchwalter, who will run in his honor at the Sam Day Buddy Run, an event designed to raise funds for childhood cancer research. The foundation, established in memory of Sam Day, aims to raise $90,000 this year, a target Varma and Buchwalter have already contributed to by raising over $3,700. Lorna Day, the foundation's founder, highlights the alarming fact that only four percent of the National Cancer Institute's budget is allocated for pediatric cancer research. Varma attributes his strength to his supportive parents, who encourage a mindset of hope.

The run will begin at Doernbecher Children's Hospital, where many children receive treatment, and conclude at Terra Linda Park, symbolizing the journey from treatment to recovery. The event not only honors Sam’s memory but also aims to fill a critical funding gap in childhood cancer research. Their collective effort underscores the importance of community support in the fight against cancer.
